More from SPCS Class of 1963 Reunion

More postings brought over here from the Facebook page for those of you who eschew Facebook. (Some days, I don't blame ya!)

Many people brought their mimeographed copies of the "Cathedral Telstar" with them to the reunion. Cindy Kamphaus graciously loaned me her copy to scan and share with you. Remember how great those purple pages smelled?!!

Cindy Kamphaus' "Good Posture" award from 1961. (Nowadays, EVERYBODY in the class would get one, right?)

Mary Pat Horan Corder commented: "Of course, we wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by making them think they were slouching."

Is the "Bishop's Relief Fund" the place where we could "save pagan babies"?? (Good Lord...)

Here's Cindy's 8th grade photo:

And here is MY 8th grade photo. I got in trouble for this black-and-white checked dress on photo day, a hand-me-down from my tall cousin in Montrose, CO.  Sr. Mary Josephine said that it was "too low cut" and made me have the photos retaken with my red cardigan over the dress backwards.  My Mom essentially said "What the...?" when she saw the choices of poses and we purchased THIS pose.  Sans the sweater.

Here's Marie-Therese Caldwell's 8th grade photo:

Here's a St. Dominic Savio Club membership certificate. Apparently, the club was to provide a good role model for young Catholic boys.  The St. Maria Goretti Society was the girl's role model.

There was a song that we sang as members of both of these clubs.  Here's a link to a YouTube rendition of that rousing song! http://youtu.be/c9zXF0z_py4

Sister Mary Jacinta was a 7th grade teacher for some of us, and then as 8th grade teacher for some of us.  She taught us Spanish from this book:

Thanks, Linda Conley, for the loan of the book!!

Here's a photo of Sister Mary Jacinta in later years. In both photos, she's the one front and center.

We all loved to sing the Mary hymns from the Laudate.  Many people brought their Laudates to the reunion. Here's a couple of MY favorite songs:

And the Baltimore Catechism. Question. Answer. Question. Answer. No deviation. Learn this stuff and become a good Catholic, eh?

This past Saturday, May 18, about two dozen members of the St. Peter's Cathedral Grade School graduating class of 1963 celebrated our 50th graduation anniversary with a mini-reunion. The original class size was approximately 80 students.

We met at 3pm at the grade school and Principal Lynda Higgins allowed access to the school to visit our old classrooms.  We originally attended first grade classes in the OLD St. Peter's grade school building (southeast corner of the church parking lot...LONG since demolished) until Thanksgiving of 1955, because the new school was not quite ready for our occupancy. We moved into the new school after Thanksgiving break in 1955 to complete our first grade in the newly constructed school.  We were actually the first group of children to attend classes throughout all eight grades. The school recently absorbed several other grade schools in the parish and the blended result is now called Resurrection School.

Cindy Kamphaus, Sister Dorothy Henscheid (formerly Sister Mary Lois) & Roberta Mueller outside the "supplies" closet. Cin & 'Berta were the "supplies" gals in eighth grade, going from room to room with compasses, protractors, rulers, notebook paper, erasers...OLD-school stuff!

While most attendees still reside in the KC area, some of our classmates attended from as far away as California, North Carolina, Colorado, Ohio, Texas and the St. Louis area.

After the tour, we attended 4pm Mass at St. Peter's Cathedral, celebrated by Fr. Harry Schneider.  Sister Dorothy Henscheid, our second grade instructor (back then, her name was Sister Mary Lois) also attended the tour and the Mass.  Sister also joined the group for continued conversation at the Panera Bread in Mission, Kansas.

We ran an ad on the back advertisement page of the church bulletin for two weeks that read: "In gratitude for our excellent Catholic education. St. Peters Class of 1963"

The arrangements for this get-together were made through a special Facebook page for our class and through postcards mailed with the information to those for whom we had contact information, but who were NOT Facebook members.  I'm duplicating the FB postings here for classmates who are not FB members.

Here's a group photo taken at the church after Mass.

Many people brought along old artifacts and mementos from grade school days to share: Laudate hymnals; Missals with the Latin on one side of the page and the English on the facing page; First Holy Communion purses, rosaries, prayer books, scapulars; Science Fair certificates; St. Dominic Savio Club and Bishop's Relief Fund certificates. Amazing what we hang onto, isn't it?  :)

We all had a wonderful time catching up with one another!

NOTE: Check the 2013 Blog Archive over there on the right hand column for an earlier posting about this event that includes lots of photos of mementos. I'll also scan and post additional things over the coming weeks.

Gorty and the Shoestring

It was one of those relatively quiet Sunday mornings, with the summer sun slatting through the living room verticals as we groggily slurped our wakeup coffees and reviewed what passed for news in the weekend Post-Disgrace.

It was our weekend to have the girls, and they were still abed upstairs, buried under mountains of covers, despite the warmth of the late July morning.

Murphy padded noiselessly from kitchen to living room to foyer, circling his territory again and again. It was what he did and seemed to enjoy doing so, with a great deal of purposefulness. His littermate, Gort, was in the lower level of the condo, meowling his morning trills and squeaks.

Peripherally, I may have realized that this was odd, as usually Murph and Gort were typically inseparable: The Dynamic Duo, Furrier and Furrier-er, Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dumber -- all sorts of lovingly abusive nicknames abounded for our year-old pets.

Murphy was actually named for the realtor who found us the condo: She was a redheaded, patient and sincere young woman; Murphy was a red tabby, patient and sincere young cat. Gort, on the other hand, survived the initial suggestion that the then 9 year old Lindsey had made for his name: Fluffy. "Let's see if his personality suggests a better name," I gently urged.

Indeed, he DID come up with the perfect name for himself shortly after that. The beige, stripey, long-haired, um, fluffy kitten trotted stiff-legged around the corner into the family room from his evening meal, looking pleased with himself and in charge of the world in general and us in particular. His posture most definitely was informed by the robot Gort from the classic movie, "The Day the Earth Stood Still." So: Gort it was.

But I digress (always.)  On this particular morning, as I had noted, the boys (cats) were exhibiting their usual behavior, but Murphy finally decided that Gort's verbalizations needed some investigation, and down the steps he went, venting his own questioning trills and squeaks to his brother.

Soon, our reverie was rudely ended when we saw Gort rocket up the steps as if he had been launched by a slingshot, with Murphy in hot pursuit.  Round and round and round they went, so fast, it seemed as if they were defying gravity and whipping around the room on the walls instead of the floors.  Kind of like one of these things:
Lindsey had brought the boycats a shoelace to celebrate their 1 year birthday and -- after exhausting the cats with playing "chase the shoestring" for hours earlier Saturday evening -- had innocently left it with them overnight.  Seemed harmless at the time...but, nooooo.

This turned out to be Gorty's first manifestation of a lifetime of bad decisions, as he had decided to INGEST the shoelace overnight. Nature was attempting to take its course and the shoelace had partially exited Gorty's body from his south end, along with a lovely necklace of his handcrafted brown ... um ... jewels attached.  Murphy had decided that this was a grand fun game that his brother had invented and was chasing Gort robustly, swatting at Gort's beige fuzzy behind with the enticing "toy" dangling therefrom.  Michael and I had to double-team them to catch Murphy, shove him in the closet, then calm Gort down enough to assist him with his unwanted accessory.  (Not to mention the cleanup in aisles 6 through 10. Gag.)

We were fortunate that Gort successfully passed the shoelace without having it become entangled in his young innards, but good heavens: What possessed him to EAT the damned thing?

It was a Sunday morning that has lived in family folkore since then.

Alas, Murphy and Gorty are no longer with us, but so many fond memories of them remain.

St. Peter's Cathedral Grade School
Class of 1963

Yes, indeedy. Graduated from grade school 50 years ago next month. Through social media, my fellow classmate David Briscoe and I have reached out to our classmates from lo, these many years ago. As of this date, we have close to 20 people who will join us on Saturday, 5/18 in KCK for a tour of the grade school, followed by 4pm Mass attendance. After that, we'll gather at the Panera on Martway in Mission, KS for Kodak moments. [I suppose more correctly they'll be camera phone moments -- although I actually DO still own a camera, albeit digital.]

Lots of interesting memories have been shared by the group, including lengthy diatribes on Miss Lord, a.k.a. Mrs. Bozich, our sixth grade teacher. She was pretty universally disliked and feared, and many of our classmates shared memories of her that are the things of nightmares and lengthy therapy sortings.

Others have chosen to post photos in social media of buildings/movie theaters from downtown KCK, vintage toys from that era, school supplies, Camp Fire Girl beads...stuff that people our age like to talk about, eh?

Here are some ancient relics from First Holy Communion for this class, which was on 5/5/57.

Would you like to see how cute I was in grade school?
